Pulse 2.0 Interviews Founder & CEO of ReferU.AI, Joel Geddis

ReferU.AI Founder & CEO Joel Geddis was recently featured in Pulse 2.0 in an executive interview discussing the origin, mission, technology, and future of ReferU.AI. The profile captures what makes ReferU.AI different: we are not building another lawyer directory, advertising marketplace, or lead-generation engine. We are building attorney matchmaking based on evidence.
In the interview, Joel shared the personal story that led to ReferU.AI’s creation. After a close friend’s four-year-old daughter suffered a traumatic injury, the family spent two years contacting 140 law firms, only to be told repeatedly that the matter was “not a fit.” That experience exposed a core failure in the legal market: people in crisis are often forced to search for representation through ads, directories, slogans, and guesswork rather than court-record evidence of relevant experience.
Joel’s response was direct. He went to the courthouse, purchased millions of court records, and built an early AI/ML agent to identify attorneys who had handled similar fact patterns. The system surfaced a previously overlooked trial attorney. The family’s 141st call finally resulted in a fit, and the matter ultimately resolved with a substantial settlement. That prototype became the MVP for ReferU.AI.
Today, ReferU.AI is the “Tinder for Finding Attorneys.” Users describe their legal need in plain language to Link, our AI intake agent. Link examines court dockets and documents to match users with attorneys who have demonstrable experience in similar matters, while also considering preferences such as location, budget, language, payment options, and accessibility needs. The platform is free for users and is designed to automate attorney outreach and consultation scheduling after a match is made.
The Pulse 2.0 feature also highlights a key distinction in our approach: ReferU.AI is matchmaking, not marketing. We do not sell paid rankings, attorney subscriptions, or advertising placements that influence results. Our matching process is based on case similarity, not who paid to appear higher in a directory. Joel emphasized that all active, licensed attorneys are available through the platform, rather than only attorneys who choose to buy visibility.
The interview also examines the technical work behind the platform. ReferU.AI began with docket-level data, then evolved into a two-stage pipeline that uses machine learning over dockets for initial search and Agentic-RAG over primary legal documents, including complaints, motions, orders, and transcripts. This enables ReferU.AI to compute a case-similarity index between a user’s legal need and an attorney’s prior experience in similar fact patterns.
Privacy and security were also central themes. Joel explained that ReferU.AI treats privacy as a core architectural constraint, not an afterthought. The platform does not train large language models on user conversations, redacts personally identifiable information before processing, encrypts data in transit and at rest, and applies strict minimization and retention controls.
The feature also reflects ReferU.AI’s broader purpose. As a Public Benefit Corporation, ReferU.AI has pledged a portion of profits to The ReferU.AI Foundation, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to supporting child victims of abuse and neglect. The company’s north-star metric is making its first donation to the Foundation, connecting the company’s origin story to a measurable access-to-justice impact.
For Joel, the mission is straightforward: when people need an attorney, they are often facing one of the most difficult moments of their lives. The decision should be transparent, evidence-based, and aligned with the facts of their case. ReferU.AI turns raw court data into actionable insights so people can find representation based on court-record evidence instead of marketing hearsay.
Smarter Results. Better Representation. The Best Outcomes.
